You'll find Kaikoura on the South Island of New Zealand. Off the coast of the village is a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most magnificent creatures with which we share our planet. Among them the giant Sperm Whale which can grow up to 20 metres in length and has the largest brain of any animal alive. Sperm whales are the longest and deepest diving of any cetacean; for the most part they inhabit deep water. From the bluffs here you can see the outlines of the whales, along with their especially powerful 15-foot "blows."

Not only can we introduce you to the magnificent Sperm Whale, but also to migratory Humpback Whales (June & July), Orca (summer months), New Zealand's own tiny Hectors dolphin, the high spirited displays of the Dusky dolphins, New Zealand Fur seals and the Royal Albatross.

Kaikoura is also the migratory route from Antarctica to the tropics, which also results in the odd pods of orca (or killer) whales, pilot whales and the rare blue whale being sighted. Kaikoura is one of the few places where you can view whales in their natural habitat and is a worthwhile experience. Organised whale watching trips and swimming with the dolphins are available.
